According to a reputable insider, Guerrilla Games may launch the long-rumored Horizon multiplayer project before the release of the third main entry in the series. If this report proves accurate, fans eager for a sequel to Horizon Forbidden West may face an even longer wait.

Currently, Guerrilla Games is overseeing an impressive 16 Horizon-related projects, which include various cross-media adaptations. Some fans have even deciphered a few of these, such as a Horizon live-service multiplayer game, MMO, TV adaptation, a sequel to Forbidden West, a Zero Dawn remaster, and the upcoming LEGO Horizon Adventures. Most of these projects are being managed by external studios under Guerrilla's supervision.

Internally, Guerrilla has been working on the Horizon multiplayer game for several years, alongside the third single-player installment that follows Horizon Forbidden West. However, in a recent Spawncast episode, credible industry insider Jason Schreier indicated that Guerrilla is likely to release the multiplayer project first, with the third single-player Horizon game still a "ways off."

Schreier also commented on Sony's ongoing push into live-service gaming, noting that the Horizon multiplayer game is one of the few live-service projects that survived recent cancellations. This suggests that Sony has high confidence in the project, though only time will reveal how it performs in the market, especially after the commercial failure of Concord. Given that the multiplayer game has reportedly been in development since at least 2018, it's plausible that Guerrilla is now in the final stages of its creation.

Horizon's captivating world and massive machine enemies are two of the franchise's standout features, making the idea of a multiplayer game quite promising. There are even rumors that the Horizon multiplayer project might introduce larger machines, offering a unique experience compared to other live-service games. However, there's also the challenge of post-launch support, as seen with Naughty Dog's decision to cancel The Last of Us Online due to the resources required for ongoing support. It remains to be seen how Guerrilla plans to manage this aspect for the Horizon multiplayer game.
